Florida traffic stop lands tourists in jail on drug charges

During winter, many out-of-state residents come to Florida to enjoy the warm weather. This appears to be what a group of young adults were doing when police officers interrupted their trip to Tampa by pulling the driver of their vehicle over in a traffic stop. The driver and one of the passengers are now in jail, slated to face drug charges in court.

The officer who made the stop says he detected a strong aroma of marijuana when he approached the vehicle. He says when saw there were five people in the vehicle as well as two dogs that appeared to be pit bulls, he called for backup. At some point, he asked everyone to step out of the car.

Police say the initial stop was made because the officer observed the vehicle traveling more than 80 mph in a 70 mph zone. The officer also said the car was weaving in and out of three lanes of traffic. When the vehicle was searched, police claim to have found approximately 100 grams of marijuana and other drugs in addition to drug paraphernalia, a digital scale and a grinder.

The driver, age 18, apparently said she already got into trouble with the law in another state for drugs and stays far away from such things nowadays. She asserted that the drugs the officers say they found in her car must belong to her boyfriend (who was also arrested) or her other passengers. In light of the fact that those facing drug charges are from another state, their bonds were set at $104,000 and $102,000, respectively. It would be prudent for anyone facing similar charges in Florida to request immediate assistance from an experienced criminal defense attorney.
