Medicinal marijuana okay in some situations in Florida

There are certain circumstances under which an otherwise illegal drug in Florida is okay to obtain and consume for medical reasons. In 2016, a legislative initiative was passed that allows eligible recipients to use marijuana within very specific parameters. This permission is granted provided the patient has been certified by a doctor licensed by the state as a marijuana doctor.

There are several criteria that must first be met for someone to qualify for use of marijuana for medicinal purposes. For instance, a patient seeking permission to use marijuana must already be diagnosed with a debilitating medical condition, such as Crohn's disease, Parkinson's disease or epilepsy, and have tried other treatments to no avail. Those who suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder may also pursue eligibility for medical marijuana.

Another requirement that must be met before someone may legally use marijuana in Florida is related to age. No one under age 18 qualifies. A person must also be a legal resident of this state and possess a valid driver's license issued in this state as well.

There are additional prerequisites to qualifying for medical use of marijuana in Florida. Therefore, it's typically best to seek clarification of all laws and regulations governing the matter to avoid potential problems. There have been instances where people were charged with marijuana crimes whose defenses rested on the fact that they were using the drug medicinally. Anyone currently facing such issues may reach out for support from an experienced defense attorney who will know what the best defense options are in a particular situation.
