One Florida firefighter has been arrested on charges related to domestic violence. The alleged situation of domestic violence that led to his arrest was his hitting his girlfriend. The man now faces charges of felony battery. People in Florida who are accused of felonies are always presumed innocent unless proved guilty in court.

Police said the girlfriend of the firefighter, age 37, contacted them regarding a battery that had reportedly happened a few days prior. Authorities said the 29-year-old woman showed them pictures of a cut on the forehead along with other injuries suffered during the battery incident. The man allegedly told police that his fingernail had cut the woman's forehead.

After being jailed, the man was released following the posting of a bond of $10,000. The firefighter was suspended with pay following the incident, pending the investigation's outcome. It was not clear whether the man had an attorney.

When individuals are accused of felonies in the state of Florida, it is within their rights to go to trial to fight their charges. As an alternative, an accused individual might decide to try to strike a plea deal with the prosecution, if available. When the prosecution's evidence is strong, a plea might offer the advantage of a more lenient sentence for the accused than what would typically be imposed if he or she were to be convicted at trial. Either way, defense counsel will strive to protect the client's legal rights while also pushing for an outcome that is ultimately in his or her best interests.
