Deputy arrested for drunk driving in Florida

A sheriff's deputy in Florida currently faces charges of driving under the influence. Police said the man accused of drunk driving crashed into another car. He was driving a police cruiser at the time of the alleged DUI accident.

Police said the man did not see a car at a stop light. When swerved to avoid the car, he ended up striking another car. No one suffered injuries in the crash.

Witnesses told the authorities that the man appeared to be dazed and incoherent. He received treatment at a hospital and was then released. Police charged the man with driving under the influence. Reportedly, he refused to take a sobriety test at the crash scene, and the hospital that treated him did not administer a blood test.

When people have been charged with drunk driving, the charges must be proved beyond a reasonable doubt; otherwise, a conviction is not possible. The possible consequences of a person's first DUI conviction include facing penalties such as jail time, a fine and the temporary revocation of his or her license. In the case of the deputy who has been charged, his job would likely be at risk as well. A thorough look at the evidence may be a chief area of focus for the criminal defense in such a case in Florida. Defense counsel will push for an outcome that is in the client's best interests while also making sure that all of the client's applicable rights are protected during the criminal proceedings.
