Alleged wrong-way driver arrested for drunk driving

A woman has been taken into custody in Florida after reportedly driving in the wrong direction on the Interstate. The alleged drunk driving incident occurred a little past 5 a.m. on a recent Sunday. A police officer said he was almost hit by the wrong-way driver before she was arrested.

The police officer said he was traveling on Interstate 275 to get home following his work shift. As he went toward one avenue, he reportedly saw a speeding vehicle heading south. He said the vehicle was headed toward his police vehicle.

The officer tried to evade the other vehicle and narrowly missed colliding with it. Another police officer said he saw the other vehicle leave the Interstate while going the wrong way at another street, so he stopped the vehicle. The second officer said he determined that the driver might have been impaired, so other officers were called to conduct a sobriety test. The 34-year-old female driver was taken into custody and faces a DUI charge. The woman's blood alcohol content was under Florida's legal limit, but based on the state's law, a person can still face a DUI charge if he or she exhibits signs of being impaired.

Anyone accused of drunk driving in Florida has a right to defend against the charges in criminal court. Prosecutors have to prove the elements of the crimes charged beyond a reasonable doubt; otherwise no conviction is possible. However, the person may be offered a plea deal with prosecutors, which might offer the benefit of leading to a lighter sentence than what would result following a verdict of guilt at trial. There is no obligation to accept a plea offer, however, and every accused individual has the right to proceed to trial.
