A dozen face drug charges in Florida

A dozen individuals in Florida were arrested on weapons and drug charges recently. The arrests took place on a Friday. The individuals arrested on weapons and drug charges have been taken into custody a total of more than 170 times in just one county alone.

Since drug-related violations are typically connected to other crimes, police drug enforcement efforts recently occurred in areas that police said have experienced recent thefts and burglaries. During the police operation, deputies say they recovered a stole automobile. They also reportedly seized narcotic medications, ecstasy, cocaine, drug paraphernalia, marijuana and money they believe to be the profits of illicit drug dealing.

Police also say they seized a gun. The people arrested during the operation range in age from 21 to 68. One individual had 38 prior arrests, while two others had 37 and 34 prior arrests, respectively.

If appropriate to the circumstances, the criminal defense for the individuals facing drug charges might explore the possibility of a plea deal with the prosecution. A plea agreement might offer the benefit of resulting in a lighter sentence for an accused person compared with what would typically be rendered following a verdict of guilt at trial. However, there is no obligation to accept a plea bargain, and it is within the right of each defendant to proceed to trial, thus requiring the government to actually prove the formal allegations by evidence that meets the Florida criminal justice system's exacting requirements. Only if and when these charges are proved beyond a reasonable doubt can a conviction be handed down against an accused individual.
