Alleged wrong-way driver faces drunk driving charges

One man in Florida has been accused of driving under the influence. Police said he was caught driving the wrong way down a street before being arrested for drunk driving. His arrest took place on a recent Sunday morning.

Police reported that a 33-year-old man was operating a Jeep Liberty sport utility vehicle, heading west in the eastbound lane of a street. All of a sudden, the man's automobile hit a Nissan Murano. Then, the vehicle reportedly struck the front part of a Chevy Silverado.

Officials said both the Murano and the Silverado were going in the opposite direction as the Jeep Liberty. One woman who was riding in the Silverado received minor injuries, and she was transported to the hospital. The alleged wrong-way Jeep Liberty driver also received a minor injury. Purportedly, this driver did not want to complete a breath test after reaching the jail, and he was charged with DUI as well as wrong-way driving.

The man accused of drunk driving may go to trial to contest the charges filed against him, or he may plea bargain with the prosecution if given the opportunity. The benefit of striking a plea deal with prosecutors is that it may lead to lesser charges and thus a lighter sentence for the accused compared with what would be imposed following a guilty verdict at trial. The accused individual -- alongside legal counsel -- has the right to pursue the course of action that is ultimately in his or her best interests in the state of Florida.
