2 arrested on drug charges in Florida

Two individuals were recently arrested in Florida for drug trafficking. The arrests on drug charges took place on a Friday. The suspects were arrested following a traffic stop.

Police said they spotted an unmarked automobile at a hotel at about 10:30 a.m. At that time, they saw a 34-year-old man driving without a seatbelt. Police said they knew that the man's driver's license had been revoked by the order of the court because he had failed to make child support payments. They stopped the car and arrested him.

The 26-year-old female passenger in the car was reportedly nervous at that time and appeared as though she was trying to throw something away. While she did this, the woman allegedly dropped a couple of syringe caps from her pockets. Police said the caps tested positive for the drug meth. Authorities said they also found that the woman had three syringes and that the vehicle had hydrocodone pills totaling over 14 grams--which is considered a felony offense of drug trafficking in Florida. Both the woman and the man were charged with drug trafficking and other charges.

Prosecutors in Florida must prove drug charges beyond a reasonable doubt before a person can be convicted at trial. This standard exists in an effort to protect innocent people from being found guilty of crimes they did not commit. Instead of going to trial, a person accused of committing a drug crime may take advantage of the opportunity to plea bargain with the prosecution. If offered, a plea deal might lead to lighter charges and/or a more favorable sentence for the accused. The criminal defense will pursue the best outcome for the client considering the circumstances surrounding the case.
