Man charged with drunk driving following fatal crash

One man was recently arrested on drunk driving charges following a fatal accident in Florida. The motor vehicle accident happened on New Year's Eve. The alleged drunk driving collision took place at the intersection of two streets.

Police said a 59-year-old man was driving his car east on a street a little before 8 p.m. When he reached an intersection, a motorcyclist, 31, was going west through this same intersection. The car driver made a left turn into the path of the motorcycle, at which point the vehicles collided.

The motorcyclist passed away at the crash scene. Police said they determined that the car driver was driving while alcohol impaired. He was booked into a county jail a few hours later. His current charges include DUI manslaughter.

The man who has been charged with drunk driving in Florida has the right to proceed directly to trial to vigorously contest the charges. Alternatively, he might decide to pursue a plea deal with the prosecution, if this is available. Any plea agreement's terms are typically dependent on the strength of the prosecution's evidence. Nevertheless, if the evidence is strong, a plea agreement might offer the advantage of a sentence that is more lenient than what would typically be imposed if a conviction were to be secured at trial. Clearly, the man and his criminal defense face many important decisions as the case moves forward; defense counsel will strive to protect the accused person's legal rights while fighting for a result that is ultimately in the defendant's best interests.
