ER doctor faces drug charges in Florida

One doctor in Florida has been accused of committing various offenses. His arrest on DUI and drug charges was made after police said he crashed his vehicle into an intersection's median. The individual who was arrested is an emergency room doctor from the southwestern part of the state.

Police said the accident involving the doctor occurred when the man blew through a red light. The man's vehicle then collided into a median, and when he was found, he appeared to be passed out in the driver's seat. Police said his pants and the vehicle's floorboard were covered in vomit, and the smell of alcohol was detected when the man spoke.

Police reported that the man initially said that he had not been in a crash and that his car was not on a curb; however, he changed his story after police directed his attention to the car. Police said the doctor, 40, had multiple pills in his car along with a pot pipe and marijuana wax. He currently faces drug possession and DUI charges.

Prosecutors have a duty to prove the man's drug charges beyond a reasonable doubt; if they cannot do this, a criminal conviction cannot be handed down. The man -- alongside his criminal defense counsel -- might also have the chance to negotiate a plea deal in exchange for personally favorable sentencing considerations. A thorough look at the evidence that the prosecution plans to present to support the charges certainly might be a chief area of concentration for the criminal defense in this type of case in Florida.
