2 face drug charges in Florida following traffic stop

Two individuals in Florida have been arrested on drug charges. The arrests on drug charges took place following a traffic stop by police on a recent Thursday morning. The traffic stop happened along Interstate 10.

Police said they stopped a gold Nissan for violating traffic laws along the interstate at around 11:55 a.m. Police reported that they then asked the driver to leave the vehicle after they noticed the vehicle occupants moving around inside the car. When the driver said his driver's license was in the car, police approached the car's passenger and reportedly smelled pot inside the vehicle.

Police said the passenger gave police both his license and the driver's license. When police searched the car, they allegedly found more than 50 grams of pot along with Xanax pills. Neither men claimed to own the bag that held these items. Both men were arrested and taken to the county jail. They both currently face charges of possessing marijuana and intending to sell it as well as possessing a controlled substance.

It is within the rights of both of the men to go straight to trial to fight the drug charges. Defense counsel for the men might also explore the chance to plea bargain with prosecutors because a plea deal could potentially lead to a more lenient sentence compared with what might result after a verdict of guilt at trial. The criminal defense will aim for an outcome that is ultimately in the best interests of the accused considering the circumstances surrounding their arrests in Florida.
