2 accused of felonies in Florida for tying up child

Two people in Florida currently face felony charges related to child abuse. When people are accused of committing felonies in the Sunshine State, they may face stiff penalties, such as time behind bars. However, they cannot be convicted unless their guilt is proved beyond a reasonable doubt in criminal court.

The arrests on felony charges took place after a man called 911 because a girl had reportedly told him that her parents had tied her up using zip ties and had also abandoned her at home. Police said the 12-year-old girl told them that her parents usually tied her up when she got angry. They also are said to have frequently locked the girl inside a playhouse in the home's loft area, which they used as the girl's bedroom.

The girl reportedly told police that her parents would secure the playhouse from the outside, which would keep her from being able to escape. In addition, all of the windows except for one were screwed shut. Police said the playhouse smelled like urine, and the girl told them that she usually had to soil herself since she could not leave the little house. Both the girl's dad and mom face charges of aggravated child abuse.

When individuals in Florida are charged with felonies, they have the right to proceed to criminal trial to aggressively fight their charges. However, if possible, they may instead decide to seek a plea deal with the prosecution. A plea agreement might offer the advantage of a more lenient sentence than what would usually be imposed if a conviction were to be secured at trial. In either situation, defense counsel will pursue the best outcome for the accused and seek to protect their legal rights as well.
