Man charged with felonies following police chase

One man currently faces felony charges in Florida after leading police on a chase by foot. The incident took place on a recent Friday. People who are charged with felonies, which have long-ranging consequences, have the right to defend their innocence in the criminal court system.

Police said the man, 42, was wanted for grand theft auto as well a burglary after a motorcycle and a couple of ATVs were reportedly stolen. When police tried to serve these warrants on him at about 7 a.m., the man reportedly leaped from his vehicle and ran into some woods nearby. Police demanded that he stop, but he allegedly refused to do so; he even took an officer's radio and attempted to grab the officer's gun.

The man ended up being tased and taken into custody. He now faces charges such as aggravated battery on one police officer, assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest violently, criminal mischief and eluding and fleeing. He is also accused of depriving a police officer of the ability to communicate.

If appropriate, the man's defense counsel might explore the possibility of entering a plea agreement with the prosecution. A plea agreement might be beneficial in that it may lead to a sentence that is lighter than what would result following a guilty verdict at trial. It is within the rights of people accused of felonies to proceed directly to trial, where they will force prosecutors to prove the accusations made against them beyond a reasonable doubt; this must take place before any conviction can be handed down in Florida.
