Man faces drunk driving charges after alleged hit-and-run crash

One man in Florida currently faces several criminal charges following an alleged hit-and-run accident involving a bicyclist. These charges include drunk driving charges. The accident occurred on a recent Monday afternoon.

Police said the man was driving north along US Highway 41 at about 2:30 p.m. All of a sudden, he hit the corner of a bike that was stopped in a bicycle lane. The man then reportedly fled the accident scene.

The man's car entered a neighborhood and then came to a stop, which is when the man is said to have gotten out of his vehicle and attempted to run on foot. Authorities finally reached him and detained him. The bicyclist, 49, suffered injuries in the crash and was transported by helicopter to a hospital, where his injuries were deemed not to be life-threatening. The man who police said struck him now faces felony drunk driving charges, as well as charges of felony leaving an accident scene. He also received a citation for not driving in only one lane.

Felony drunk driving charges can result in time behind bars, as well as a fine, if a person ends up being convicted of these charges. The conviction may make it difficult for the person to land a job or even rent an automobile for years to come. It is for this reason that drunk driving charges have to be proved beyond a reasonable doubt by prosecutors and only then can a conviction be secured. The accused person has the right to aggressively fight the charges filed against him in a Florida court.
