Man facing drunk driving charges following fatal accident

A man in Florida was recently charged with driving under the influence. His charges come after he was reportedly involved in an accident that led to the death of another man. The alleged drunk driving accident took place in July.

Police said the man was at a pool hall one night and groped a woman there. After being kicked out of the establishment, he reportedly sat in his truck, which was parked and facing the building. Authorities said the man then gunned his truck across a parking lot and went through the building's front windows.

The man ended up pinning a 60-year-old man and a 52-year-old woman against the bar. Another woman, age 58, was also hit. Police said they finally obtained enough evidence to take the man into custody, so he now faces charges of DUI causing serious injuries and manslaughter, along with three misdemeanor DUI counts due to damaging property or people. He was also charged with misdemeanor battery.

DUI manslaughter charges are serious in Florida, as a person convicted on these charges can expect to spend time in prison as well as have his or her driver's license revoked for life. Before an individual accused of drunk driving can be convicted, the government must prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt in court. The accused person may also choose to take advantage of a plea agreement if presented with the opportunity to plea bargain with the prosecution, which may lead to a reduced sentence that what would be imposed following a conviction after trial.
