Woman faces drunk driving charges in Florida

A woman in Florida was arrested earlier this year on charges of driving while under the influence of alcohol. The arrest on drunk driving charges occurred after police said she caused a single-car crash. She was recently convicted with regard to the DUI crash.

The accident happened at around 10:30 p.m. According to authorities, the 51-year-old woman ended up losing control of her vehicle. Her Jeep overturned and came to a rest on both lanes of a road.

She was trapped in the vehicle briefly, but fire fighters were able to extricate her relatively quickly. She refused to get medical treatment. Law enforcement authorities charged her with driving under the influence as well as resisting a police officer without violence. A judge sentenced the woman to probation for one year, and she was also ordered to pay fines and charges totaling over $1,000. She was additionally ordered to complete schooling for first-time DUI offenders and to not consume any alcohol.

When people in Florida face drunk driving charges, they have the right to proceed to a criminal trial if they believe this to be in their best interests. They cannot be convicted unless prosecutors are able to prove their charges by relevant and appropriate evidence. In some situations, in light of the weight of the possible evidence, the accused person may elect pursue negotiations for a plea deal. If this is available, it may lead to lighter charges and/or a sentence that is more lenient than what would be imposed after a finding of guilty at trial.
