Woman charged with drunk driving in Florida

One woman in Florida was recently charged with driving while under the influence of alcohol. Police said the arrest was actually her fifth for drunk driving. The woman, however, is presumed innocent unless prosecutors can prove her guilt in criminal court.

Police said the 37-year-old woman was driving in the vicinity of United States Highway 1 and another road one day. A police officer reportedly noticed that she was not maintaining her lane as she was going south on the highway. The officer stopped the woman and determined that it was necessary to conduct a drunk driving investigation.

The woman was arrested following the traffic stop. She was then booked and jailed. Police said that she had been arrested multiple other times in other parts of Florida for driving while intoxicated.

A DUI charge, especially when it is not an individual's first, is serious, and a fifth DUI conviction in Florida may result in up to five years of jail time as well as a fine. A convicted individual may also have his or her driver's license revoked/suspended and have to get an ignition interlock device on his or her vehicle. A drunk driving conviction furthermore makes it difficult for people to get professional jobs or even rent a vehicle. This is why prosecutors must prove these types of charges beyond a reasonable doubt before a conviction can be handed down against the defendant. This standard is set intentionally high in an effort to protect innocent people being punished for crimes in Florida.
