Woman allegedly hides drugs in baby formula, faces drug charges

One woman in Florida is facing drug-related charges. The incident resulting in the drug charges took place at a hotel room on a recent Sunday. The woman accused of committing the drug crime also faces a charge of child neglect in connection with the incident.

According to police, the 21-year-old woman was smoking pot in a hotel room, and her daughter, 10 months old, was in the room with her. Police at the scene decided to check on the child's food and noticed a container labeled as holding Enfamil formula. The container ended up testing positive for both heroin and crack cocaine.

The woman was arrested and taken into custody. She now faces charges of child neglect as well as drug possession. Authorities took the child into protective custody. A 21-year-old man who was in the hotel room with the woman and baby was also arrested on charges of drug possession, child neglect and probation violation.

A person accused of committing a drug crime or other crimes in Florida has the right to go straight to trial to vigorously fight the allegations. The drug charges and other criminal charges must be proved beyond a reasonable doubt by prosecutors before a conviction can be secured. Alternatively, the accused individual might choose to accept a plea deal with the prosecution, if available, with the terms of a plea deal usually depending on the strength of the evidence. A plea agreement may be beneficial in that it might offer a lighter sentence than what would be imposed if a defendant were to be convicted at trial. Either way, a defendant in this type of criminal case has the right to pursue his or her best interests.
