Florida ranks middle of the pack for drunk driving strictness

Because of the dangers that drunk drivers can pose to others on the road with them, states throughout the nation take keeping those drivers off the road seriously. The measures taken vary from state to state as do the nature of the consequences. But just how do the consequences for drunk driving in Florida measure up to other states? A study recently conducted by WalletHub looked into this.

In its final analysis it determined that Florida lies in the middle of the rankings. Specifically WalletHub ranks Florida as 21st when it comes to strictness regarding DUIs. The study highlighted several facts about the penalties assessed in the state.

First, it pointed out that following a DUI arrest, the vehicle of the person arrested is not impounded. Next, there are no minimum sentences in the state and a charge for the alleged activity will not be considered a felony until the third time it occurs.

While jail time may not be the end result for someone charged with drunk driving, fines are on the table. First-time offenders will pay a minimum of $500 and those found guilty of a second offense will pay at least $1,000. Those found guilty of drunk driving in the state of Florida will encounter expenses for other things related to the matter. For example, they will find that their insurance rate will increase an average of 40 percent.

A DUI will remain on the person’s record for 10 years following the incident.

While the consequences for a DUI conviction in the state of Florida are not as harsh as in other states, they nonetheless could have a serious impact on the life of the person who is facing them. For that reason it is important that those who are facing a drunk driving charge do everything they can to defend themselves. The best way to get started with this is to contact a criminal defense lawyer.
