Cowboys of a different kind: Cocaine issues in Florida

Authorities say drug-related problems in Florida have been on the rise. Supposedly, cocaine, in particular, has made a comeback as a drug of choice in this region. Officials say most cocaine shipments arrive in the Sunshine State from Colombia. The process of moving the drug across borders and states is apparently so popular, those who conduct such operations are dubbed, "cocaine cowboys."

It's one thing to call someone a nickname. It's quite another, however, to accuse a person of illegal drug activity and formally charge him or her with a crime, which is what often happens to people who are targeted in drug task force investigations. In such situations, every person is presumed innocent unless and until prosecutors are actually able to prove otherwise in court.

Florida Customs and Border Protection says it has seized nearly 10,000 pounds of cocaine in this state in 2016. Fentanyl is reportedly the only drug associated with more fatal drug overdoses than cocaine. Reportedly, a kilo of cocaine supposedly rakes in about $28,000 in the illegal drug market.

Regardless of how a person winds up facing cocaine charges in Florida, the fact that an arrest has taken place no doubt means negative consequences will occur in other areas of life as well. Facing drug charges means repeated court appointments and other official meetings, which may mean a defendant's job is placed at risk. There are typically family problems associated with drug-related issues as well. To mitigate one's circumstances, it's generally best to seek experienced counsel and representation as soon as possible before court proceedings begin.
