U.S. Coastguard offloads alleged cocaine shipment in Florida

In most Florida circles, $500 million is considered a substantial amount of money. If one were to assign this value to a load of cocaine drugs, it would be logical to assume a lot of drugs were involved. This estimated amount is the value of U.S. Coastguard cutters' reported shipments of cocaine, amassed in several alleged drug busts at sea.

The six cutters, along with a Royal Canadian ship, claim an interception of drugs occurred near the coastlines of Central and South America. Earlier this year, the U.S. Coast Guard unloaded a shipment they claimed was cocaine, worth $1 billion. U.S. Coast Guard cutter Hamilton was at the helm of most of the recent operations, bringing in approximately six cases of drugs.

Authorities say they will now prosecute several suspected drug smugglers. The Caribbean and Pacific waters are said to be major drug trafficking locations. Some of the drugs said to have been smuggled into the United States were apparently brought here by submarines.

Since the start of 2017, officials say law enforcement agents have brought in at least 20 tons of cocaine. In situations like this, where multiple drug arrests are made in various locations over a period of time, connected with the same operation, charges wind up being pressed in separate states and adjudicated in the appropriate court, according to where the arrests were made. In Florida, a criminal defense attorney with experience in high-profile situations would be a defendant's best bet for staying out of prison and avoiding conviction altogether.
