Woman waives hearing in connection with criminal defense

A woman being held in custody in a location outside of Florida will, in fact, be brought to this state to stand trial on federal charges. As part of her criminal defense, she recently waived an extradition hearing where it was thought she would fight against it. This is one of many types of situations that require decisions from defendants; most understand that it's often best to rely on experienced guidance as they navigate the criminal justice system.

This particular situation involves the widow of Omar Matteen, the shooter from the June 2016 Pulse nightclub tragedy in Orlando. Matteen died in a shootout with law enforcement agents after killing at least 49 people at the club and injuring nearly 70 others. The woman to whom he was married now faces federal charges for obstructing justice by aiding and abetting her husband.

Prosecutors claim the widow was fully aware of her now deceased husband's plans to carry out a mass shooting at the nightclub. Her case has been wrought with apparent conflict between court systems, as made evident last month when a court in California (the state where she's being held in custody) ruled for her release on bail, but a federal judge in Florida reversed the decision. The U.S. District Court judge determined that although she did not shoot anyone, she remains a danger to society.

Many disagree with this judge's assertion. The woman's freedom and entire future are on the line. Once she is brought to Florida to stand trial, she could face life in prison if convictions are handed down for both charges. The type of criminal defense presented in court in such situations is often crucial toward obtaining successful results.
