Unlawful firearms possession and drug charges filed in Florida

A Charlotte County jail in Florida recently increased its inmate population by two. This came after a drug raid that resulted in the arrests of one man and one woman. Both are now facing drug charges and other accusations regarding the unlawful possession of firearms.

Those arrested both happen to be convicted felons. Those with a felony conviction on their criminal record are barred from owning or possessing firearms. The officers who conducted the recent drug raid claim that each of the individuals they took into custody were in violation of that law.

The pair was in an Englewood apartment when police searched the premises. In addition to cocaine manufacturing, they are also accused of committing a first degree felony with a weapon and several charges related to possession of a controlled substance. Generally speaking, in order to obtain a conviction, a prosecutor must first prove that the substance involved is, in fact, a controlled substance and not only did the defendant know it was, but he or she had actual or constructive possession of it.

Being accused of these types of crimes can really take a toll on a person's private and/or professional life. Although many drug charges often carry very severe penalties under conviction, it is quite possible that an experienced criminal defense attorney would be able to mitigate such circumstances by aggressively fighting against charges on behalf of a defendant. Many people have avoided Florida prisons and have successfully averted other serious repercussions in the past by securing immediate assistance from a defense lawyer upon their arrests.
