Police say fatal Craigslist deal led to felonies

Many Florida residents and others throughout the nation buy and sell things through Craigslist, the notorious classified advertising website. Hopefully, those who do pay close attention to recommendations for personal safety when engaging in commercial transactions with strangers. One such deal recently ended in tragedy, with two young men now charged with felonies.

The situation unfolded when a man and his son reportedly made arrangements to sell a dirt bike through Craigslist. As is common with such endeavors, a meeting place was scheduled where money would be exchanged for the product. The meeting apparently occurred, as planned, but with a very different ending than the sellers had in mind.

At some point, a firearm was dislodged and the father was struck and killed. The son was not physically harmed in any way. Authorities later found the dirt bike and arrested a 16-year-old boy. A couple days later, another teen, age 17 and male, was also arrested in connection with the incident.

That person has been charged with robbery and first-degree murder. Penalties under convictions for felonies in Florida vary depending on several key factors. The state's criminal justice system for juveniles has its own governing regulations as well. In some situations in the past that involved teens, those accused were made to stand trial as adults because of the seriousness of the allegations. Regardless the age of a defendant, it is most often beneficial to request immediate assistance from a skilled defense attorney before facing  any type of criminal charges in court.
