Police may file drug charges after incident in store parking lot

Florida parents often take their toddlers with them when they go shopping. Sometimes, incidents occur during their travels that place the kids in harm's way. Authorities say one man recently endangered his child when he left him in the car with another person while he (the father) took off running from police. Child neglect and drug charges were filed. Authorities say the man was selling heroin.

Police say they first became suspicious of the situation when they noticed a car pull into a parking zone marked for handicapped persons. Authorities say they were nearby when they witnessed the man in question handing over several baggies to another person who had entered the vehicle. Police say the bags contained heroin and that the two people were conducting a drug deal.

As officers approached the vehicle, they say the man suddenly fled the scene on foot. However, he left his 3-year-old son in the backseat of the car, as well as the man in the passenger seat. That individual purportedly acknowledged to the police that he had just bought $80 worth of heroin. Officers quickly caught up with the 31-year-old father and placed him under arrest.

When police file drug charges in connection with situations that involve children, it is not uncommon for additional charges to be filed regarding endangerment or similar offenses. Here, the man was accused of child neglect, as well as heroin delivery, cannabis possession and resisting arrest but without violence. He also received a citation for parking his vehicle in a handicapped parking zone. Anyone fighting against criminal charges of this nature may first want to consult with a Florida defense attorney.
