Children in social service custody, adults facing drug charges

Police went to a house in Florida recently and wound up making four arrests. Those taken into custody were apparently all members of the same family. They range in age from 28 to 64. Not only are the four adults facing drug charges, but they've also been charged with crimes against children.

Authorities say there were five children in the house when they entered the premises for an alleged narcotics raid. A description given by police lists the house in extreme disrepair with various hazards in open view that posed grave danger to the children. The Department of Children and Family Services removed the children from the home.

Allegations of animal feces in every room of the house and live wires exposed near children's outdoor toys may have been key factors in neglect charges filed against the four adults in the house. They are also accused of possessing and selling cocaine and heroin. The area is reportedly known as a high crime region; in fact, there was another recent drug bust there involving methamphetamine.

Anyone in Florida whose children are taken away by authorities would understandably be worried and fearful. In such circumstances, there's a lot an experienced criminal defense attorney can do to help those facing charges. Drug charges that lead to convictions may carry stringent penalties that include time in prison, which -- of course -- would separate a parent (who was convicted) from his or her children. By relying on aggressive defense assistance, negative aspects of a particular situation might be far less severe.
