Florida man charged with selling drug that masquerades as heroin

Illegal drugs are often sold on streets in Florida. Some people charged with manufacturing, possession or distribution of hard drugs wind up avoiding conviction when prosecutors fail to prove they are guilty. A particular incident occurred recently that involves a man who is accused of selling a drug that is known to be far more potent than heroin.

Carfentanil is an strong opioid drug that is approximately 5,000 times stronger than its better known counterpart, heroin. Carfentanil is often used to tranquilize elephants. Many people in Florida have died after using it.

When the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Technical Hazards Response Unit was sent to search a particular man's house on a recent Friday, they donned special suits when they were told they were searching for carfentanil. Narcotics detectives say the man in question sold tiny packages of carfentanil to an undercover law enforcement agent. Reportedly, the potent drug has been detected in the bodies of at least 107 drug overdose victims in Florida this year.

Authorities say they believe the drug that mimics heroin is manufactured in China, then it is sold online and delivered postal mail to the United States. Many drug users apparently think they are using heroin when, in fact, they are actually using carfentanil. It is so potent that a mere few grains, as small as table salt, are enough to kill a human being. The man who was investigated on suspicion of selling the drug was eventually handcuffed and charged with several drug-related offenses. A Florida defense attorney often assists people in such situations by acting on their behalves in court.
