Alleged drug kingpin to face cocaine charges in Florida

The Argentina government recently announced that it has extradited an alleged drug kingpin to Florida. The reported purpose of the extradition is so the man can face charges involving cocaine trafficking. Authorities met the man at the airport and escorted him on his flight back to the United States.

The 45-year-old is suspected as a leader of a known drug gang. He was arrested near Buenos Aires several years ago. At the time, he claimed Colombian police and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration had plotted against him.

The man sought political asylum in Argentina, but his request was denied. Penalties for conviction of serious drug crimes involving cocaine tend to be very severe. Many convicted in past situations have endured lengthy prison terms, as well as substantial monetary fines.

Persons who have been able to avoid conviction in Florida or other states, or at least have successfully minimized the negative impacts of their situations, are often those who have acted alongside skilled and aggressive defense assistance. Prosecutors may use tenacious tactics against defendants charged with cocaine crimes in their quests to put the accused individuals behind bars. An experienced criminal lawyer knows how to combat such strategies by employing various defense options that may be available. In fact, there have been many occasions where defense attorneys have been able to challenge proffered evidence on the grounds that investigating authorities violated the personal rights of the defendants in question. If the court agrees that a rights violation has occurred, it may deem certain evidence inadmissible or could even dismiss the pending charges.
