Man accused of drunk driving, killing friend

A collision in Florida recently took the life of a man, age 26. The man deemed to have caused the crash was reportedly engaged in drunk driving at the time of the collision. The man, age 27, now faces DUI manslaughter charges as a result.

Police said they noticed a pickup truck speeding along State Road 520 in March. They said the truck did not negotiate a turn correctly. The vehicle, therefore, collided with a building.

When authorities arrived at the crash scene, they found the 26-year-old man dead and saw that the 27-year-old driver had suffered minor injuries. Officials said the two me, who were reportedly friends, had run up a tab of more than $100 at a bar in the area before the crash took place. The driver was found to have had a blood alcohol content of triple the legal limit following the collision. Many alcohol containers were also allegedly found inside the pickup truck. If the driver is convicted on his charge, he may be sentenced to prison for up to 15 years.

If appropriate to the man's circumstances, the criminal defense team might consider pursuing negotiations for a plea deal with the prosecution. Plea deals may offer the advantage of leading to lighter sentences for accused individuals compared with what would usually result from guilty verdicts at trials. The man accused of drunk driving and causinga death has the right to go to trial, where he essentially forces the government to actually prove the accusations made against him by presenting evidence that meets the standards of the Florida criminal justice system. Only if this is accomplished can the defendant be convicted and sentenced accordingly.
