Woman sentenced following fatal accident involving drunk driving

A prison sentence of eight years was recently rendered in a DUI case involving a woman in Florida. The woman was reportedly driving under the influence of both alcohol and drugs and ended up killing a passenger, 23, in her car in a motor vehicle accident while trying to evade state police. The accident allegedly involving drunk driving occurred in 2015.

According to authorities, the woman, 28, was approaching a checkpoint for driver's licenses one day. The checkpoint was being operated by the state highway patrol. Police said the woman almost struck a trooper at the checkpoint and was told to stop her car. As police went toward her vehicle, the woman allegedly laughed and sped off. While the woman sped along Country Road 179, she lost control of the car, and the vehicle hit a power pole.

The woman was thrown from the vehicle as a result of the collision. Although she survived, her passenger did not. A blood test reportedly revealed that the woman had alcohol in her system along with THC, amphetamines and ecstasy. Following the accident, the woman was charged with felony DUI manslaughter and felony vehicular homicide. She pleaded no contest in the case.

A person facing charges of drunk driving or DUI involving drugs in Florida has the right to proceed to trial if he or she believes it to be in his or her best interests. The prosecution has to prove these charges beyond a reasonable doubt before a criminal conviction is possible. The defendant may decide to take advantage of a plea deal offered by prosecutors, rather than going to court, as a plea deal may lead to a lighter sentence than what would be imposed following a guilty verdict at trial.
