Man allegedly drives wrong way, faces drunk driving charges

One man in Florida was recently arrested after police said he was driving in the incorrect direction on the interstate. The alleged incident took place along Interstate 75 and is said to have been the result of drunk driving. It occurred in the morning hours on a Monday.

Police said they received a call about a car that was almost hit by another vehicle on the interstate around 10:50 a.m. The driver who claimed to have nearly been hit was going north, while the vehicle that almost hit this driver's car was going south at about 70 mph. The southbound vehicle is said to have been traveling in the interstate's emergency lane.

The southbound vehicle's driver was pulled over by police. At that time, police said they noticed that his speech was slurred and incoherent and that his eyes were watery. They also allegedly detected the smell of alcohol coming from the man, and he stumbled while walking. Based on a blood alcohol test, the man's blood alcohol content was allegedly more than triple the legal limit.

The man now faces charges of drunk driving as well as fleeing to escape police and resisting a police officer. If deemed appropriate in light of the circumstances, the man's defense counsel might explore the possibility of plea bargaining with the prosecution. A plea deal might offer the advantage of resulting in a more lenient sentence for the man compared with what may be imposed after a guilty verdict at trial. The man has the right to go to trial to contest the charges instead of striking a plea deal in this type of criminal case in Florida.
