Alleged hit-and-run crash leads to drunk driving charges for man

One man in Florida is currently facing DUI charges following an alleged hit-and-run crash. The reported drunk driving accident took place in an area where road construction was taking place. One worker suffered injuries in the crash and was taken to the hospital, where his condition was deemed critical.

Police said the 33-year-old construction site worker was hit shortly after 12:50 a.m. on a recent Friday. The accident happened when a 26-year-old man was driving a Honda south on a street and hit some barricades. The Honda kept going through a lane closure and eventually hit the 33-year-old worker.

The man driving the Honda allegedly failed to stop and became involved in yet another collision with a vehicle that was unoccupied. Police reported that he then went to his home. Police were called to the home to respond to a disturbance call there, and they discovered an abandoned Honda nearby. The man was taken to the hospital for treatment since he had suffered minor injuries; he was then taken into custody on charges of DUI with serious bodily injury as well as leaving a crash scene where serious injury occurred. He was further arrested for criminal mischief, leaving an accident scene with damage to property and resisting arrest.

A person facing drunk driving charges may choose to go to trial or to accept a plea deal if offered by the prosecution. A plea agreement may offer the benefit of a lighter sentence than what would be imposed if a defendant were to be found guilty at trial. Anyone facing DUI charges is entitled to the same legal rights guaranteed to people accused of engaging in other types of criminal conduct in Florida.
