6 charged with felonies related to drug crimes in Florida

Six individuals were recently arrested on felony charges in Florida. Police said these charges are related to drug crimes. People who have been charged with felonies are still presumed innocent unless the government can prove their guilt in a court of law.

Officers from several agencies, including Florida State University police, Florida's law enforcement department and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency, conducted the investigation that led to the arrests of allegedly high-level traffickers of drugs. The six individuals who were arrested included three current students of Florida State University. Their charges include selling cocaine, trafficking in cocaine and conspiring to sell this drug.

Police said it appeared that the individuals who were arrested were trying to introduce cocaine into higher-education areas. The university said it did not tolerate this or other types of illicit activity. Police continued to investigate the reported drug crimes and said extra arrests were pending.

As this case moves forward, the individuals who have been charged with felonies may be given the opportunity to plea bargain with the prosecution, which might lead to reduced charges and/or lighter sentences. They may also simply decide to go straight to trial with the hopes of being found not guilty. At trial, the prosecutors have to prove the charges beyond a reasonable doubt; otherwise, no conviction can be handed down. Defense counsel will pursue the most personally favorable result for the defendant while also ensuring that all of the accused individuals' rights are protected at all stages of the legal proceeding.
