Woman faces drug charges following search of home

One woman in Florida was recently charged with drug possession. The drug charges came after detectives, who had a search warrant, searched her home. The arrest took place on a recent Friday.

Authorities searched the home of the woman, 47, at about 4:30 p.m. While searching her house, police reportedly found marijuana and crack cocaine in different locations inside the house. They also said they discovered many weapons, including several rifles, handguns, ammunition and shotguns.

Police also reported that they found nearly $1,000 in cash, which they believe was proceeds from the sale of drugs, in the woman's purse. Three individuals, including the woman, were at the house during the police search. The woman ended up being charged with not only marijuana, drug paraphernalia and cocaine possession but also possessing firearms while being a felon.

Individuals who face drug charges are always presumed innocent unless prosecutors can prove these charges beyond a reasonable doubt. This standard helps to keep innocent people in Florida from being convicted of criminal charges and sent to prison or punished in other ways as a result. If appropriate, defense counsel might explore a plea deal possibility with the prosecution; a plea deal might result in a lighter sentence for a defendant compared with what may result from a guilty finding at trial. Otherwise, the accused person may go to trial and force prosecutors to prove the formal allegations by evidence that meets the criminal justice system's exacting standards. A person facing drug charges has the same rights as guaranteed to people accused of other types of crimes in Florida.
