16 in Florida face drug charges in connection with drug bust

A total of 16 people were recently arrested on drug trafficking charges as part of a drug bust in Florida. Police said the drug bust leading to drug charges began one and a half years ago. The drug bust involved heroin, with police saying that hundreds of doses of this drug are now off the streets.

According to police, the drug organizations that were involved in the criminal activity attempted to traffic more than 30 kilograms of the drug. This amount of heroin is equivalent to nearly 330,000 dosages of the drug, worth $2.6 million. Authorities also reportedly found more than 500 grams of what they said was oxycodone pills featuring an $85,000 street value. About $15,000 worth of Xanax was also allegedly uncovered.

Police reported that the area of Southwest Florida has been plagued with oxycodone and heroin problems. One health system, in fact, counted two deaths last year from opioids such as heroin. Authorities said that some of the people who were recently arrested preyed on people with substance abuse-related problems.

The individuals facing drug charges are presumed innocent until and unless they can be proved guilty in criminal court. Prosecutors have to prove these charges beyond a reasonable doubt before a conviction can be secured; this high standard is in place in an attempt to prevent innocent individuals from being convicted of crimes. This is critical, as a drug trafficking conviction carries serious penalties, including several years in prison. The goal of the criminal defense is to strive for an outcome that is in the best interests of the accused.
