Man faces drug charges after traffic stop in Florida

A man in Florida has been charged with engaging in multiple drug crimes. He was arrested on a recent Saturday morning. The arrest on drug charges took place following a traffic stop.

Police reported that they had stopped the 36-year-old man's car at about 6:30 a.m. when they noticed that his brake lights were not working. Before the traffic stop, officials had just gotten a call regarding a reckless motorist on a nearby road. The man ended up failing field sobriety tests following the traffic stop.

Police took inventory of the man's car before it was towed and allegedly found a small bag of cocaine, nearly 60 Xanax pills and eight pills of Oxycodone. They said they also found marijuana wax, a vapor pen, hash oil and cash totaling more than $1,900. The man now faces charges of possessing cocaine, DUI and possessing a drug without a prescription. His other charges include possessing drugs with the intent to sell them and also the possession of drug equipment. He stayed in jail on a bond of $30,000.

Any person facing drug charges in Florida is presumed innocent until and unless the charges are proved beyond a reasonable doubt, at which time a conviction can legally be secured. This high standard is in place in order to prevent innocent people from being convicted and sentenced accordingly. A person who has been accused of a crime may decide not to go trial and instead accept a plea deal offered by the prosecution, which may result in a lighter sentence than what he or she would receive if found guilty in court.
